A Work-at-Home Mom

Published by juliea at 1:27 am under Uncategorized Edit This

As a stay-at-home mom of two young children I wanted to find a way to make money without sacrificing time with my children.  When I first started searching online for jobs in which I could work from home I encountered many scam sites.  I tried paid survey sites in which I literally made pennies a day.  I also looked into some sales sites but was immediately turned off when I would have to pay money before I could work.  In my opinion any company that someone has to pay to work for is a bit shady.

I have always loved to write but never considered using my writing skills as a way to work from home.  I did not think there was any market to do this in.  I was surprised when I found my first writing site through an ad on Facebook.  I clicked on a link for a website known as Suite 101 which was looking for freelance writers.  I submitted writing samples and an application but I did not really expect to hear back from the site.  I was pleasantly surprised when I received an E-mail telling me I was one of the 20% who apply and are accepted to write for the site.

Through forum discussions on Suite 101 I learned about Associated Content and Demand Studios.  I began to write for Associated Content right away as no application is required.  I then applied for a job with Demand Studios.  Demand Studios is much more difficult to be accepted by as a writer.  I had to submit a few writing samples, my full resume, and links to other published work.  I was extremely happy when I received and E-mail telling me I was hired there as well.

Working from home with an infant and a toddler usually means I do the bulk of my writing after my children go to sleep.  This can be difficult at times and I admit that I sometimes drink more coffee than I should late in the evening.  There are nights when I can get a number of articles done in one evening and other nights when I am so tired I have to go to bed early.  I feel that quality in work is very important and I have learned to tell when I have reached my limit and it is better to stop writing and rest than to write mediocre articles.

Between Suite 101, Associated Content, and Demand studios I am able to earn a part-time income.  I am pleased with this and excited to consider how much I might be able to make when the kids are a little older and I can spend more time writing.  Being a freelance writer has been a wonderful opportunity for me to be a successful work at home mom.
